Some sadness on election night.

It's Election Night in America! I love watching CNN and MSNBC (and checking in for a few minutes on Fox News just for the hell of it) hour after hour watching the votes roll in. It's so thrilling. Sure, we lost the House to the Republicans. But we kept the Senate! And my dear California returned to her blue nature with the election of a Democratic governor (Jerry Brown), re-election of a Democratic Senator (Barbara Boxer), and a Democratic Lieutenant Governor (Gavin Newsom).

But what I learned tonight is that some people I thought were my dearest friends, my strongest allies in the fight for equality for all...voted not only Republican, but Tea Party. They voted to elect Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina. They voted conservatively on important ballot measures. They are disappointed to be residents of this state, and can't wait to get out and back to their red homes.

This changed the way I feel about citizenship, about this election, about my relationships. This is a time to celebrate the successes my party managed to squeeze out of this sad, sad election day. It's a bit dampened by my loss of faith in these dear friends.
