It was nice that Valentine's Day fell on a Sunday this year. And it was even nicer that that Sunday was Transfiguration Sunday. In the gospels, today is the day that three of the disciples see Jesus for who He really is. They see Him shine in all His glory. If you were in a Lutheran church this morning, you absolutely sang, "Shine, Jesus, Shine."
What I like about today being Valentine's Day is that I think the thing that most transfigures us is love.
A year ago this weekend I was at CLU with my family and Cass' family, cheering him on in a basketball tournament. That was awesome. But he doesn't play basketball for CLU anymore. And I'm not at CLU this weekend -- I'm at home in Encinitas. A year ago, I'd never been to Turkey. Sam was in Hong Kong. My roommates were 90 days away from graduation --now it's me who's counting down. I wasn't Pres Host Coordinator. Ben and I were just getting to be friends. There was such love in my life from so many angles -- Fletcher, Sam, Tom, Nick, Cass, Matt, Breanne, Jocelyn, Carrie, Emma, Kaila, my parents, my pastors, everyone in my life.
In the last year, and every year of my life, I am literally inundated with more love than I could ever handle. I have the best friends in the entire world; I have the best family to ever exist. Every day, someone tells me I am loved.
The love that makes this love possible is the love of God. The love of God shown to us through the person of Jesus. The person that Peter, James, and John saw transfigured on the mountain so many years ago. Today is the day that we should feel the love of Christ and the love of each other more strongly than any other day of the year. What a blessing that today is the coincidence of two days of such love.
