I have always been a huge Eminem fan. He's a brilliant lyricist -- his rhyme schemes are unprecedented. He manipulates words in a way that I cannot describe. And certainly he is a big fan of the limelight. He likes to cause trouble and make a scene. But often he uses his reputation to his advantage. He wrote songs like "Mosh" and like "White America" that spoke to the injustices happening daily at the hands of the Bush Administration. I ate that shit up.
For this reason, I bought his new album, "Relapse." I wish iTunes had a refund feature. It might be the worst album I own. Each of the 15 songs (there are some skits and multiple versions of songs on the 22-track album) centers either on rape or drugs. Drugs I'll deal with -- that doesn't offend me. But that he would have the audacity to reference rape after rape as though it is a normal, everyday activity that can be rapped about and glorified -- I am disgusted. He is always trying to be the most outrageous rapper around -- I get that. If it was one song, I would just be disgusted and move along. But it was track after track after track. I could hardly believe it.
I might never buy another Eminem album. I might discourage other Eminem fans from ever buying another Eminem album.
Rape is not a joke.
