On October 9 and 10, I attended the Global Forum on Human Trafficking in Carlsbad, CA. Two freeway exits north of my home in Encinitas. Fantastic! I spent those two days with 7 other CLU students (and one alum, <3 Amy Brown) and 1000 other abolitionists learning what we at CLU can be doing to fight human trafficking, as well as learning what other people in other spheres are doing for the movement. It was simultaneously energizing and devastating.
Watching the videos of people enslaved, and listening to the horror stories of those who have seen it firsthand, and hearing how much it will take to turn those into success stories...it reminded me what I am called to be.
We are called to act with justice
We are called to love tenderly
We are called to serve one another
To walk humbly with God
We are created for love. Period. This is how we act on that love. This is how we make that love into the strongest verb. It is here and now that we are learning just how much of a difference one voice can make. In the immortal words of my president, Barack Obama, "One voice can change the world."
And because many of those enslaved have lost their voices, we are called to speak out for them. We are called to turn their terrified whispers into a rebel yell.
