Last week, the Episcopal Church released another statement further affirming their support for the ordination of homosexual clergy, and the blessing of same-sex unions. Hallelujah! While this is absolutely wonderful news and I praise God for the continuing Christian love exhibited by the Episcopal Church, I’d like to see the ELCA actually make a statement every once in a while. Their most recent statement after 2 YEARS of studies being done in congregations is that we are going to stick with our previous policy. Our previous policy is sort of a cop out, because it says that we will ordain celibate homosexuals, but if they become part a committed relationship, they can be de-frocked. Really, ELCA? Why do you care who is having sex with whom? What does that matter to you? Do you ask your heterosexual pastors if they are in committed sexual relationships? No. If we're going to go Bible literalist on this one, the Bible says no pre-marital sex. Can you de-frock a pastor for having pre-marital sex? Do you even ask them if they are having pre-marital sex? NO. YOU DON’T.
And that is what is ridiculous. You don’t give a shit what heterosexual celibate priests are doing to small children, but you can’t comprehend a gay man having a committed relationship with another gay man. Go back to seminary, read the Greek, and find that the word “abomination” that is aggressively over-cited in Leviticus means “uncustomary.” As in, “unusual.” I’m pretty sure that being “unusual” is not a sin. Or a crime. Or reason for defamation of character, physical abuse, and even death. And, yes, I'm aware that this is really the dumbest argument of all time, because no one is ever going to concede to the other side. But look at our all-loving God and tell me with a straight face that that God would create that which God detests. And that that God would send the Christ to teach the world to hate. Are you kidding me? That is the opposite of the fundamental principles of Christianity.
So look at the name you give yourself, and look at the man who gave you that name, and decide whether you are worthy to carry that name. Because when you even once in your life hate another human being simply for what he was biologically made to be…you are the abomination. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, if you will.
